Directions

Red Cinder is about 50 miles by road from Keahole Airport (which
serves Kailua-Kona) and 60 miles from Hilo Airport. Allow at least
1.5 hours driving time each way‹most of Highway 11 is a two-lane
road and residents prefer a leisurely driving pace.

Please try to arrive during daylight hours. The turnoff from the
highway is poorly lit and difficult to see at night.

From Keahole Airport (Kona):

Turn right exiting the airport onto Highway 19 (follow signs to Kona
and Volcano).

Stay on the main highway bypassing downtown Kailua-Kona ‹ it soon
becomes Highway 11 and proceed south through the towns of
Kealakekua and Captain Cook.

After this, the road becomes less settled; the last town (and last
gas station) before you turn off will be Ocean View.

Keep track of highway mile markers; from this direction, look for
Mile Marker 70.

Just past Mile Marker 70, turn left on Lorenzo Road (a marked rural
road). If you reach South Point Road on the right, you¹ve gone too
far.

Continue slowly up Lorenzo Road about 1 mile. It's the last house on
the right. Look for the Red Cinder sign at driveway entrance. Park
in designated area at the house.

From Hilo Airport:

Follow signs through town to Highway 11 (toward Volcano).

Stay on Highway 11, passing Volcanoes National Park (about halfway
to Red Cinder).

Just before your destination, you'll go through two small towns
the larger is Na'alehu. Last town is Waiohinu (very small: gas
station and store).

Once you've passed South Point Road (on your left), go slow and look
for Mile Marker 69.

Just past Mile Marker 69, turn right onto Lorenzo Road.

Continue slowly up Lorenzo Road about 1 mile. It's the last house on
the right. Look for the Red Cinder sign at driveway entrance. Park
in designated area at the house.
